Die grandiosen Arena, die Überlieferungen nach von Elfen gebaut wurde, bis zu den gemächlichen Hügeln, geschmückt mit märchenhaften Städtchen, über paradiesische Inseln und steinerne Perlen an der Adriaküste, die vom Meer in den Schlaf gewogen werden, jedes Detail der größten kroatischen Halbinsel setzt mich immer wieder in Erstaunen.
Sobald ich die Grenze von Slowenien hinter mich gebracht haben, erwartet mich stets aufs Neue eine Rhapsodie des Grüns und Blaus, ein betörender mediterraner Garten und ein Waldreich, in der duftenden Trüffel wachsen, und in den steinernen Gassen, Höfen und Treppenabsätzen blüht die Geschichte.
Die malerischen Ortschaften wirken wie Kulissen eines Kunstwerks, sie strahlen Lebensfreude aus und haben Freude am Sonnenuntergang. Die Spur der Geschichte führt mich zu den mächtigen Mauern des Leuchtturms von Savudrija, wo sich der Volksüberlieferung nach ein österreichischer Graf in ein junges Mädchen verliebte, und die Trümmer der versunkenen Stadt Sipar und das ATP Turnier der Spitzenklasse zeigt mir das lebhafte Antlitz der Stadt Umag die unsere zweite Heimat geworden ist..

Das wie eine Blüte offene Istrien ist ein Land der Diversität, in dem viele Kulturen einander inspirieren und sich gegenseitig ergänzen. Das beste Beispiel ist die Euphrasius-Basilika, ein in die UNESCO-Liste des Welterbes eingetragenes Meisterwerk, dessen Glockenturm über das Blau um Poreč herum herrscht. Eines der schönsten erhaltenen Denkmäler der frühchristlichen Kunst führt mich mit seinen prachtvollen Mosaiken unfehlbar durch die reichen Schichten der Geschichte.
In Rovinj kam ich seinerzeit als Tourist an und bin nun einer ihrer begeisterterten Anhänger.
Die dicht aneinandergedrängten kleinen Häuser, über die auf der Bergspitze die Kirche der St. Euphemia wacht, die Terrassen mit Meerblick und die künstlerische Ausstrahlung der Gasse Grisia brachten dieser istrischen Perle den Titel einer der romantischsten Städte des Mittelmeerraums ein. Umgeben von der üppigen mediterranen Vegetation des jahrhundertealten Waldparks Goldenes Kap und den kleinen Inseln, auf denen der Geist der Aristokratie zu spüren ist, gilt Rovinj zugleich auch als Ort des Lebens und der unbeschreiblichen Ruhe – in die man sich leicht verliebt, besonders wenn die Hauptsaison zu Ende ist.
Istrien zu erkunden bedeutet, in die spezifische Landschaft dieser Region einzutauchen. Die Lim-Bucht ist eine über 10 Kilometer lange Poesie, tief ins Land eingeschnitten, ein überflutetes Karsttal der Träume, das an seinem Ende mit der Romualdo-Höhle aufwartet, in der wertvolle historische Funde gemacht wurden. Hier schläft das Wasser in der schönsten Wiege, und die Sonne lacht in 50 Nuancen von Türkis. Eine Bühne wie geschaffen für eine Verkostung der leckeren Austern von Lim.
Das Wahrzeichen der Terra Magica sind die süßen Städtchen im Landesinneren, die eine magische Zeitreise in die Vergangenheit bieten. Am schönsten ist die Erkundungstour mit dem Rad oder auf zahlreichen Wanderwegen, zum Klang der Natur und zum Rauschen des Bachs. Das adelige Motovun, dessen Erscheinungsbild mit dem unverkennbaren Glockenturm das gemächliche Flusstal der Mirna beherrscht, birgt in seinem Kern sage und schreibe 26 geschützte Kulturdenkmäler, während die künstlerische Ortschaft Grožnjan so wirkt, als könne sie den Sommer kaum erwarten, wenn in den mittelalterlichen Gassen Jazz-Töne erklingen und die ganze Stadt sich in ein Ölgemälde auf Leinen verwandelt.
Višnjan wird allen Freunden der Astronomie gefallen, denn hier steht eine der namhafteren Sternwarten der Welt, und Svetvinčenat führt mich im Kastell Morosini-Grimani in die Ritterzeit zurück.
Hum, die kleinste Stadt der Welt, die der Überlieferung nach von Riesen erbaut wurde, oder man kann herausfinden, wie Jules Verne die Handlung seines Romans in den größten Attraktionen von Pazin – der Paziner Grotte und dem Kastell spielen ließ. Freunden des französischen Schriftstellers empfehle ich auch Labin, ein charmantes Städtchen, das seine eigene Version der Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde anbietet. Die Bergbautradition begann hier im 17. Jahrhundert. Ein besonderes Erlebnis ist es, wenn man im Volksmuseum in die Grube hinabsteigt und erlebt dann ein authentisches Gefühl der Arbeit unter Tage.
Istrien ist für mich zu jeder Jahreszeit eine Reise wert. Besonders schätze ich allerdings den Frühling, Herbst und auch den Winter. Dann meint man, ganz Istrien für sich allein zu haben.
Eine Wanderung durch die Olivenhaine, die vom Nebel durchwabert werden hat etwas mystisches. Dann meint man die Elfen zu hören, die einem Geschichten aus einer lang vergangenen Zeit erzählen.
